Repair Existing Oil Containment

Determining the best method to improve or repair existing secondary containment systems is dependent on site-specific variables, such as current type and condition of the containment.

Repairing Secondary Containment Systems

If the secondary containment system for your transformer or substation is inadequate or no longer complies with federal regulations, we can help. Along with installing new oil containment solutions, we also specialize in retrofitting, repairing or improving whatever containment currently exists. This may include adding a Barrier Boom secondary containment system to improve drainage around an earthen berm, or prevent water from pooling within composite wall containment with the addition of an HFF Oil Stop Valve.

Universal Features of BCI Secondary Containment Systems

No matter what secondary containment system is used to update or repair your existing containment, rest assured that all BCI solutions provide the following benefits:

  • Supports high flow rates at low head pressure
  • Aesthetically pleasing
  • Covered by pollution insurance policy
  • Passive containment
  • Fire suppression capabilities
  • Minimal maintenance
  • Easy installation (1 to 2 days)
  • Can solidify all types of hydrocarbons (including FR3)

System 1: Barrier Boom Secondary Oil Containment

Barrier Boom walls are self-activating secondary containment systems that work best with existing secondary containment units exhibiting issues with water retention or poor drainage, in non-permeable soil types. Water flows through the Barrier Boom, but if a large oil release occurs, the polymers in the panels solidify and shut off, preventing hydrocarbons from escaping the containment site. A bury and forget application, all Barrier Boom systems are custom manufactured to meet customer engineered specifications.

Unique Features

Barrier Boom secondary containment systems are suitable for repairing or retrofitting the following types of existing containment or containment issues:

  • Concrete Walls, holds water
  • Composite Walls, holds water
  • Retention Ponds
  • Weirs, Booms or Barriers
  • Impervious Dikes, Berms, or Retaining Walls
  • Spill Diversion Ponds
  • Earthen Berm, holds water

System 2: Geomembrane Liner System with HFF Oil Stop Valve

The geomembrane liner, integrated with an HFF Oil Stop Valve, is a common solution for rain water drainage issues found in existing concrete or moat-style containment. This secondary containment system utilizes a geomembrane liner to seal cracked or porous walls or floors, in conjunction with an HFF to filter and process wastewater. If a large hydrocarbon release occurs, the oil solidifying polymers in the HFF solidify to shut off flow, preventing hydrocarbons from escaping the containment site.

Unique Features

Geomembrane liner with HFF secondary containment systems are suitable for repairing or retrofitting the following types of existing containment or containment issues:

  • Concrete Walls, cracked
  • Concrete Walls, holds water
  • Concrete Walls, porous floor
  • Weirs, Booms or Barriers
  • Composite Walls, holds water
  • Composite Walls, porous floor
  • Concrete Vault, cracked

System 3: HFF Oil Stop Valve

The HFF Oil Stop Valve provides passive drainage by filtering and processing water and runoff at a containment site, while removing hydrocarbons to a non-detectable level. Housed in durable casing containing solidifying polymers, the HFF captures and encapsulates all organic hydrocarbons, such as sheen, gasoline, diesel, refined oils and more. In the event of a major release, the HFF automatically shuts down the water flow and prevents oil from leaving the site. This secondary containment system may also be utilized to provide a level of redundancy to ensure a release is contained if the primary containment system fails.

Unique Features

HFF secondary containment systems are suitable for repairing or retrofitting the following types of existing containment or containment issues:

  • Concrete Walls, holds water
  • Composite Walls, holds water
  • Concrete Vault, holds water
  • Retention pond
  • Weirs, Booms or Barriers
  • Impervious Dikes, Berms, or Retaining Walls
  • Spill Diversion Ponds
  • Earthen Berm, holds water
