Automatic Dewatering for Vaults and Manholes

Various industrial and commercial facilities employ underground vaults to house equipment or run cables from one part of a facility to another. These underground networks and vaults are particularly prevalent in electrical utility facilities.

Water accumulation in underground networks can pose a challenge for many facilities. To comply with federal regulations, facilities must implement water-evacuation methods that not only pump water out of vaults or separate water and oil but systems that are designed to trap oil sheen and hydrocarbons as well.

Basic Concepts is the industry leader in water evacuation systems and secondary containment. Our innovative VIPOR system is designed to enable facilities to comply with regulatory requirements by filtering oil sheen and hydrocarbons from underground water accumulations.

To help you find the dewatering solution that is right for your facility, here is an overview of the federal regulations concerning runoff from underground vaults and an outline of the dewatering equipment that can help your facility achieve regulatory compliance.

Secondary Containment Requirements for Underground Vaults

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), runoff from commercial and industrial facilities cannot contain oil or hydrocarbons that are known to have a deleterious effect on the environment. Sections 112.8(c)(3) and 112.12(c)(3) of the code of federal regulations stipulate that water accumulations must be regularly inspected for the presence of these materials.

In order to comply with these statutes, facilities are required to implement secondary containment and filtration methods or systems that will prevent oil, hydrocarbons and other contaminants from entering into navigable waterways.

The VIPOR system from Basic Concepts is specifically designed to trap and separate oil sheen and hydrocarbons from underground water accumulations for underground vaults or maintenance holes. The VIPOR system, therefore, enables facilities to comply with EPA regulations regarding water accumulation and runoff.

VIPOR-SOWF Dewatering Pump. The VIPOR-SOWF (Sump Oil Water Filtration) system is designed to polish and trap oil sheen while evacuating water from underground vaults and maintenance holes. The VIPOR-SOWF features a 6-inch filter that is designed to capture small sediment. Additionally, this system uses a 6- x 24-inch hydrocarbon flow filter to remove volatile organic compounds and hydrocarbons from runoff.

The VIPOR-SOWF is able to dewater underground networks and remove organic compounds and contaminants to a non-detectable level. By eliminating hydrocarbons and sheen from water accumulations, the VIPOR-SOWF system will enable facilities to comply with SPCC requirements from the EPA.

VIPOR-SUMP Dewatering Pump. In the event of an oil discharge, the VIPOR-SUMP dewatering pump features a complete system shutoff that will prevent contaminants from escaping into the environment. This system uses a VSF ring to filter out sediment and a 6- x 18-inch hydrocarbon flow filter to separate hydrocarbons and volatile organic compounds. The VIPOR-SUMP is ideal for transformer vaults with an existing sump crock.

VIPOR-100 SOWF Dewatering Pump. Similar to the VIPOR-SOWF, the VIPOR-100 SOWF system is designed to filter out sediment, trap hydrocarbons, volatile organic compounds, and oil sheen. The VIPOR-100 SOWF has the added feature of a flow rate that exceeds 100 gallons per minute—making it ideal for large quantities of water accumulation. The versatile pump has a wide range of applications and does not require an existing sump or crock.
