Hybrid Containment Solutions

There are many methods of secondary containment, but only BCI offers adaptable custom oil filtration solutions to complement and improve any containment system.

Integrative Oil Filtration Systems

Aside from providing the most dependable secondary containment on the market, our oil filtration and containment systems are also known for their versatility. The technology that makes up our core solution components deliver the flexibility to enhance other secondary containment methods. In many cases, our oil filtration technology can be combined alongside additional products to solve your secondary containment needs.

Some utilities favor the look of above-ground containment but want to avoid the time and labor necessary when installing concrete. An innovative alternative is BCI’s SC-3900 containment wall system. Created by stacking cinder blocks atop each other and spraying with SC-3900 to instantly form a sealed wall, it can be outfitted with Barrier Boom window panels or an HFF Oil Stop Valve for oil protection.

Fiberglass containment walls, such as Strongwell® COMPOSOLITE® Walls, provide another aesthetically-pleasing containment method. These are also greatly improved by the addition of a Geomembrane Liner and HFF Oil Stop Valve.

If space constraints could prevent SPCC compliance, we offer two different options for oil filtration and containment. Use our geomembrane liner with corrugated ADS (or HDPE) pipes to create a smaller footprint. This method is easily integrated with multiple components of our core solutions, like our Barrier Boom oil filtration panels.

We also recognize the oil containment challenges present in many underground transformer vaults, especially in urban settings. Our line of VIPOR (Vault Integrated Pump and Oil Redundancy) systems provide automatic dewatering and oil filtration while evacuating water from secondary containment vaults and sumps.

When Space is Limited, Use Perforated Pipes for a Smaller Footprint

For sites where space constraints are present, we recommend using a geomembrane liner along with perforated ADS (or any type of corrugated HDPE) pipes to create additional void space within the containment area (and increase the void volume ratio).

The oil capacity volume increases exponentially through the storage capacity of the pipes, thus requiring fewer construction materials (liner, pipes, etc.) and creating a smaller footprint. Site-specific variables help determine what drainage solution to use. In most cases, especially when the water table is close to the surface, water evacuates through a solid line from the containment area into a sump containing a VIPOR-SOWF, an automatic sump pump and oil filtration system that prevents oil from discharging into the environment. When installed below-grade on sloped sites with impervious soils, use Barrier Boom oil filtration panels for passive, compliant drainage.

Secondary Containment Wall Systems – An Affordable Alternative to Concrete

Above-ground secondary containment walls systems are an adequate secondary containment solution when aesthetics is important to the end-user. But, an effective system must contain walls, a floor and a method to evacuate waste water to prevent water from pooling within the containment area. We offer several complementary oil filtration solutions to achieve complete containment and ensure SPCC compliance when structural walls are involved.

SC-3900 Containment Wall System – PE Stamped And Approved

The SC-3900 Containment Wall System provides the highest level of dependable chemical and fuel resistant containment. When applied to stacked cinder blocks, SC-3900 industrial spray coating instantly encapsulates and seals to form a wall. It installs quickly, coats smoothly and is tack-free in seconds. The short cure time eliminates vulnerabilities to the weather, such as rain or other moisture. It can be applied in temperatures as low as negative 40° F and up to 300° F.

Application thickness ranges from 40 to 1000 mils. Extremely strong and durable, SC-3900 features 3700 to 3900 psi tensile strength, 300%+ elongation and is resistant to harsh environments. The elongation characteristic makes it strong and allows it to remain flexible and move with the substrate, even through extreme weather changes.

The SC-3900 Containment Wall System is an ideal solution for unique or non-conforming applications or irregularly shaped penetrations. It can be used with a liner or built directly over an earthen substrate. Common applications include substation containment, fuel tank containment, fuel retention walls, storm water barrier walls and drum storage areas.

Strongwell® Composolite® Walls

Some utilities prefer to use fiberglass composite walls, such as Strongwell COMPOSOLITE Walls, around substations. If the subsoil is impervious, the walls can be installed directly into the ground; for sandy or undetermined subsoils, use a geomembrane liner.

Oil Protection For Containment Wall Systems

To prevent a "swimming pool" from forming inside the walls after every rainfall, water must be evacuated. BCI offers multiple SPCC-compliant solutions. One option is to use Barrier Boom windows for oil filtration. These allow rainwater to flow off the site, while preventing the flow of any hydrocarbons.

Another option is to install a drain in the floor or side wall. Plumb the drain to a vault outside of the containment area housing an HFF Oil Stop Valve or a VIPOR-SOWF. The HFF processes all storm water and shuts off in the event of a significant hydrocarbon release; the VIPOR provides passive oil filtration and containment by automatically discharging oil-free water off-site.

Use an HFF Oil Stop Valve to prevent contaminated rain water from migrated outside of the containment wall system.
