Fire-Rated Secondary Containment Systems

Fire-rated secondary containment systems offer minimum maintenance containment that is ideal for a variety of applications. For facilities that store oil or oil-related products, barrier-boom containment liners provide a barrier of protection that will trap oil and hydrocarbons but allow water to filter through. Fire-quenching stone can be used in conjunction with containment liners to provide your facility with multiple layers of protection that will mitigate spills, leaks, and fires.

Secondary containment systems from Basic Concepts are designed to protect personnel and the environment from leaked contaminants. Additionally, fire-rated secondary containment systems offer compliance with SPCC plans and other regulatory requirements. To help you find the containment system that is right for your facility, here is an overview of the fire-rated containment solutions from Basic Concepts, as well as an outline of the SPCC requirements for the storage of oil or oil-related products.

SPCC Requirements

Any facility that stores and uses large amounts of oil or oil-related products may be subject to SPCC regulations. A Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasures (SPCC) plan details a facility’s action steps to prevent contaminants from reaching navigable waterways. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the SPCC regulations apply to facilities that:

Store, transfer or use oil. Facilities that store, transfer or use oil or oil-related products, such as diesel fuel, gasoline, lube oil, hydraulic oil, adjuvant oil, crop oil, vegetable oil or animal fat.

Store large quantities of oil. Facilities that store more than 1,320 gallons in above-ground containers—counting only containers that store 55 gallons or more—or 42,000 gallons in completely buried containers.

Could contaminate waterways. Facilities that store oil or oil-related products that could reasonably be expected to discharge into navigable waters of the U.S. or adjoining shorelines, such as lakes, rivers and streams.

Fire-Rated Containment Systems

Fire-rated containment systems from Basic Concepts are designed to satisfy the requirements for SPCC plans as well as offer protection from potential facility fires. These containment systems require little maintenance and will help protect personnel and assets in facilities that store flammable liquids.

Geomembrane Liner. The Barrier-Boom secondary containment system from Basic Concepts incorporates a geomembrane liner that will trap oil and hydrocarbons. This system can be deployed below ground level in order to create a passive secondary containment system that requires minimal maintenance.

Once the geomembrane liner is in place, fire-quenching stone can be used to fill in the surrounding area in order to provide comprehensive fire protection. One advantage of the fire-quenching stones is that they work in conjunction with the Barrier Boom system. The stones offer fire protection by allowing water to pass through while still enabling the geomembrane liner to provide filtration.

GC-2100 Liner. The GC-2100 liner system from Basic Concepts offers a customizable layer of protection. The GC-2100 system uses prefabricated panels that are available in a variety of sizes in order to provide a thicker liner-to-liner interface.

The GC-2100 liner system provides a reliable barrier for hydrocarbon filtration. By combining this system with fire-quenching stones, facilities can implement passive secondary containment and fire-prevention measures simultaneously.
