Portable Spill BermsPortable Spill Berms - Flexible Containment Berm:
Spills can occur at any time, preparing for these potential spill events is required by law. Basic Concepts’ portable spill berms are an excellent way to prepare for spills.

Deploying spill containment berms can assist in meeting and exceeding good manufacturing practices and the regulatory requirements of 40 CFR part 112 of the Clean Water Act also known as the SPCC (Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasures) requirements.

The applications where portable spill berms are used can be in the areas that are most sensitive to a chemical or oil spill. Often portable berms are utilized in remote areas or near water sources. Using a portable flexible berm is a cost effective way to safe guard against a chemical or oil spill. By preparing in advance and deploying a portable spill berm under tanks and equipment, the end user avoids a potentially expensive clean-up and fines. The cost to provide secondary containment at the beginning of a project versus the cost of a clean-up is minimal. Portable spill berms should be easy to transport, store and deploy. There are a wide variety of flexible spill berms on the market that are marketed as portable and easy to use.

Let Us Help Find What you Need:
What separates Basic Concepts spill berms from other containment berm systems is the ability to quickly have your berm deployed. With our unique design strap system most spill berms such as example, can be set up in less than 5 minutes.

(Characteristics and Features) that one should look for in the berm they choose:

1.) A single piece construction design. If you are moving around and deploying the berm in remote areas, you do not want there to be additional parts to keep up with that can be easily left behind and lost. By having a single piece construction, you also gain the benefit of have no assembly required.

2.) Several other key features to look for in your portable spill berm would be the storage size and weight of the product. If the unit is bulky and overly heavy, it will really bring into question just how portable the berm actually is. You want to provide an easy to use solution to your work crews that have to use the berms because they already view any berm as an additional work step on the job site.

3.) Finally, you want to research the materials used in the construction of your portable spill berm.

What esle to look for in the flexible containment and portable spill berm: The main component will be the berms flexible fabric body. All fabrics are not created equally. The industry standard and specified fabric of choice on many military solicitations is XR-5. You want a fabric that has a high puncture resistance to weight of fabric ratio. You also want to make sure that you are purchasing a berm that is constructed with a fabric and not a film. Many low cost berms use PE films for the body of the berm. These should be viewed as single use products. PE film can’t hold up to the requirements of a portable spill berm. The PE film will become brittle and crack and just does not have the same puncture resistance as a coated fabric. Another concern will be to ensure that the fabric used in the berm body is compatible with the chemical or oil that is to be contained.

Another area of concern is how the portable spill berm is actually constructed:
Are critical welds reinforced or are these berms RF welded or hot air welded? RF welding provides the strongest bond and helps ensure that there will not be a seam failure during containment.

The materials used in constructing the wall supports are also important.
Are the supports durable or likely to break? Many suppliers provide fiberglass or wooden support stays that can splinter and break. This just offers another risk to puncturing the body of the flexible spill berm. A better solution is to use aluminum stays that bend but don’t break.

(Product Solution)

The Sentry Quickberm is a single piece construction flexible designed portable spill berm that requires no assembly. The folded dimensions of a Quickberm are the smallest available and the weight of most size Quickberms is manageable by a two person team. Quickberms use durable XR-5 fabric for the berm body but can also source other fabrics to meet the compatibility requirements of the chemical or oil being contained.

The Quickberm is available with inside or outside wall supports that are reinforced with aluminum stays. The design of the Quickberm is very user friendly and the berms can be deployed in just minutes. Custom sizes are available for any end application. Offering the ability to custom design a specific sized portable spill berm is very advantageous because every application is different.

Basic Concepts manufactures all of our berms to order, typically with a two week or less lead time, so every berm is considered a custom job and there is no extra pricing for getting your berm sized precisely for your need.
