Drive
through Spill Berms:
Spills can occur at any time, however, facilities
are most vunerable during transfer processes that
take place at shipping dock and loading racks. Preparing
for these potential spill events is required by
law. Basic Concepts drive through spill berms
are an excellent way to prepare these area for spills.
Installing drive through spill containment berms
can assist sites in meeting and exceeding good manufacturing
practices and the regulatory requirements of 40
CFR part 112 of the Clean Water Act also known as
the SPCC (Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasures)
requirements.
Facilities must prepare for accidental container
and operator failures. Basic Concepts provides durable
and versatile secondary containment systems that
can be used for effective spill containment. Using
Basic Concepts' drive through spill containment
products assists in keeping your workplace and the
environment safe and clean by keeping chemicals
and hydrocarbons on site and not allowing them to
enter storm water drains. Many manufacturing plants
were designed prior to current regulations being
implemented. Loading racks and shipping docks were
not designed for keeping spills on site. In most
instances storm drains were installed to efficiently
remove rainwater from the area.

These older designs are often in direct
violation of storm water permitting and 40 CFR of the
Clean Water Act. Correcting these deficiencies can be
expensive. Using a drive through spill berm in loading/unloading
areas can be a cost efficient means to addressing this
issue in a site's spill plan. Manufacturing facilities
that receive chemicals or hydrocarbons at their location
should consider using a drive through spill berm to ensure
compliance with all federal, state and local regulations
pertaining to spill control.
Drive through spill berms are also utilized in remote
locations or in instances where tankers are defined as
above ground storage tanks (ASTs). Having a drive through
spill berms easily provides the ability to provide secondary
containment for these applications where it was difficult
to do so in the past.
End users requesting drive through spill
berms should require that the berm be durable and puncture
resistant. There are many fabrics available on the market,
not all are created equal. The end user should request
that the drive through spill berm be compatible with whatever
chemicals they are wanting to be contained. In addition
to this requirement, the end user should fully describe
the application so that all elements of the process can
be factored into the berm's end design. Most drive through
applications will be located outside so it is important
to consider the environmental impact to the berm. On what
type surface area is the drive through spill berm going
to be located. How much rain does the area receive, should
a hydrocarbon filter be included with the berm? If the
berm is to be located in direct sunlight then the fabric
body of the berm should be infused with UV inhibitors.
Custom sizes are available for any end application.
Offering the ability to custom design a specific sized
drive through spill berm is very advantageous because
every application is different. Tanker volume and the
loading rack dimensions often drive the final layout of
the drive through spill berm. Basic Concepts manufactures
all of our berms to order, typically with a two week or
less lead time, so every berm is considered a custom job
and there is no extra pricing for getting your berm sized
precisely for your need.
